Study groups consist of two or more students doing their homework and studying together. The advantages of study groups are many.

First, study groups help students to pool their resources together. Notes and materials can be shared and in so doing, each expands his knowledge. There can also be an effective division of labor. This means that each member can be put in charge of a particular subject or topic. That person would then scout around for notes pertaining to that particular subject or topic.

Secondly, study groups provide students with an invaluable opportunity to exchange their ideas and opinions on the various subjects discussed. From such discussions, each member of the study group will be able to see the issue from a fresh perspective, which he may not have been able to do on his own.

Sharing ideas and opinions in a study group does not mean that individuality is lost. From the ideas and opinions discussed, members of the study group can come up with their own conclusions.

However, study groups can be abused. If there were some lazy members in the group, the bulk of the work would fall on the more industrious ones. Some lazy students may even resort to copying from their friends. Moreover, study groups may not always work. It is all too easy to bring in irrelevant topics during discussions and end up gossiping and wasting time.

By and large, study groups are effective methods of studying and are therefore beneficial for students. However, all the members of the group must be serious about their work, so that each member can get optimum benefits from the study group.
