Only the government of a country - environmental problem today.

Topic: “Only the government of a country can do anything about the environmental problem today.” Do you agree?

1. Describe how the government has important authority.
2. Describe what the government can do about the environmental problem.

- It has the authority to make and enforce laws that help prevent harm to the environment.
- It can educate the general public about the necessity and ways protecting the environment.

3. Describe who else, besides the government, who can help to protect the environment.

- Individual persons can help by buying ozone-friendly products, conserving energy and avoiding littering.

4. Briefly conclude that neither the government nor individual effort is more important than the other.

“One good head is better than a hundred strong hands.” – Thomas Fuller.

The above quotation is rather apt in illustrating the importance of any government of a nation. This authority must surely be used in protecting our environment which is threatened today.

The government has the authority to enforce laws that help prevent further harm to the environment. It can also punish those who violate these laws. For example, the government can ban the sale of products that contain chemicals that are detrimental to the environment. It can order factories to deposit waste materials that are harmful to marine life in a safe manner.

Moreover, the government can educate the general public about the necessity and ways of protecting the environment. Through the mass media and schools, it can transmit these messages on a vast scale.

It is, however, wrong to say that the government is the only body that can do anything about the problem. Every single person who inhabits this earth can play a role as well. To purchase ozone-friendly products and avoid littering are only some of the ways. They may seem like a small effort but “it takes little drops water to form a mighty ocean”.

Thus, it is obvious that both the government and individuals are needed to help prevent further harm to the environment. Neither the government’s or individuals’ role is more significant than the other.
