Ever since we moved into our present housing estate, I remember Xuan working as a cleaner in the neighborhood. Wearing her colorful sarongs and bloused, she is familiar to all of us.

Every time I meet her, she greets me cheerfully with a wide toothy smile. Being joyful and bright in spite of all her hard labor and the troubles she has borne, she certainly deserves all the admiration we bestow on her.

For bits and piece I have heard, I have a general idea of Xuan’s background. The young pretty Xuan was married off at the age of fourteen, to a man she had never seen. Just before her fifteenth birthday, she gave birth to her first son, Sanh. Her husband turned out to be a hot-tempered drunkard, who often assaulted Xuan and their six children. With her traditional upbringing, she never thought of leaving her cruel husband at that time. Instead, she became the sole breadwinner of the household and worked long hours to make ends meet. Finally, when her husband assaulted Sanh so badly that he was hospitalized, Xuan left. She now lives with her children in a rented room. Completely on her own, through sheer hard work, she has been able to support and educate all her children. Her efforts have paid off, as Sanh is at present studying in the medical faculty of the local university.

Her six children are her pride and joy. After having spent some time with them, I can see why this is so. They are all sensible, kind and hardworking. With Xuan’s guidance, every one of them is doing well in school.

Although Xuan has a full-time fob and is a single parent, she makes time for anyone who is in trouble. In spite of her lack of education and her low status, people often turn to her for advice and confide in her. I have done so too, on numerous occasions.

Her dignity, simplicity and honesty are attributes which are attributes which are inspiring. She always tells me to look at the bright side of things if things are bad. She often reminds me that every problem can be overcome. She is a good example of this.
