Encouraging students to take part-time job

Topic: “Should students be encouraged to take up part-time job?”

Outline:
1. Describe how your friend, who works part-time, knows a lot of interesting things.
2. Describe the advantages of taking up part-time jobs.
- It will develop a student’s confidence, independence and responsibility.
- It will teach students the value of money.
- It will help to prepare students for working life.
3. Describe the disadvantages of taking up part-time jobs.
- It will affect the student’s studies.
4. Briefly conclude that vacation jobs would be a better suggestion.

My friend, Ronald, can tall me interesting things about working in a restaurant. This is because he works in a fast-food restaurant on a part-time basis.

I feel that students who do part-time jobs can become more confident, independent and responsible. Students who interact and deal with adults learn, through experience, how to behave appropriately in public too.

Moreover, working for a small sum of money teaches students the value of hard-earned money. Children who solely depend on their parents for their financial needs quite naturally take the money that they are given for granted. They may also tend to squander their money on useless things.

Finally, the transition between the studying and the working worlds is great. Many find it difficult initially to adjust to the working world after schooling. Students who have worked part-time would be more comfortable with the transition.

On the other hand, many parents and teachers frown upon the idea of students working part-time. One reason is that students who try to cope with both working and studying may tend to neglect their studies, homework and recreation as well.

In addition, working part-time could affect studies in other ways too. Those who do the evening or night shifts, often turn up for school late the next morning, or even absent themselves. If they do turn up, their concentration may be affected due to a lack of sleep. For some, the excitement that working life offers may cause them to completely lose interest in their studies.

In conclusion, I feel that since part-time jobs can jeopardize one’s performance at school, students should not be encouraged to take them. Students should be advised to enjoy their school days while they can. After all, they will never get to enjoy their carefree school days again, once they step into the working world. However, a good suggestion would be for the schools to organize vacation jobs for the students so that holidays could be spent in an interesting and worthwhile manner.
