“All right, you have four hours before bedtime. Spend one and a half hours on maths, one hour on history. Take a half hour break, then spend another half of an hour on science,” Giang’s mother gave her usual orders to him when he returned from school.

“Yes, mum,” the boy nodded passively.

An only child, Giang looked upon his mother as his guide, home tutor and friend. His father, a pilot, was hardly ever at home. Therefore, his mother’s company was indispensable to him. His mother was an executie officer in a bank, but she always found time to go through Giang’s schoolwork herself. Giang had always been the top boy in his form since he was in Primary Three. His mother’s guidance and motivation was the primary reason for his outstanding performance during those five years.

One day, an unexpected crisis broke the monotony of Giang’s routine. His father had a car accident and he was warded in hospital. His right leg was seriously injured and the doctors recommended that he undergo surgery immediately.

At this time too, Giang’s mother was promoted to Assistant Manager in the bank. These two situations placed great demands on her time. As a result, she could no longer dictate to Giang exactly what he was to do each day. During his final examinations, Giang experienced terrible nervous tension. He did not approach his mother as he did not want to add on to her already heavy load of worries.

When he received his report book, he was shocked to find that he had only just managed to pass. His worried mother went to see his teachers. She found that his daily performance was fine.

She had a long talk with Giang. He told her how he lacked confidence himself without her guidance. His mother finally realized that Giang had become over-dependent on her for instructions and motivation. When he was left on his own, he was at a complete loss.

Giang’s mother felt responsible for his over-reliance on her. She realized that her son had to learn to make decisions on his own and told him so. The first thing that Giang decided to do on his own was to attend a leadership training camp organized by his school.
