- The victims of war may never totally recover from the shock.

4. Briefly conclude that war is not justifiable, except for self-defence.

The world today is on the brink of self-destruction. It had already gone through two world wars. A third one would surely destroy the entire human civilization.

There are some popular arguments which seem to justify war. First, nations fight to defend themselves when attacked by others. Nations also fight to prevent further aggression. For instance, America bombed Nagasaki and Hiroshima during the second world war to put a stop to Japan’s further aggression.

In addition, during times of war, the people of a nation forget their difference as they unite to overcome a common enemy. On a larger scale, nations also cooperate to achieve this aim. For instance, during the Gulf War, America, Saudi Arabia, Britain and many other countries united to drive the Iraqi army out of Kuwait, which Kuwait had occupied by force.

Moreover, war brings about great improvements in technology. In fact, the radio and aeroplane were invented for the purpose of fighting a war. Today, the radio and aeroplane are used for communication and travel respectively.

On the other hand, war can never justify the massive and brutal killing of human beings. Very often, leaders of countries wage wars because of their lust for power. Leaders attempt to get the power at the expense of countless human lives.

War is also very cruel. Chemical and biological weapons have been invented to be used in a time of war. Each blast of these weapons can cause the agonizing deaths of countless people over a vast area simultaneously. Furthermore, victims of war can never erase from their minds the suffering they have undergone during the war. The countries involved would also face economic and political chaos following a war.

In my view therefore, war is justifiable and necessary only for the sake of self-defense. It can never be justified for any other reason.
